During a particularly difficult time in my life, I could not get away from the book of Hosea. I remember there was even a moment during a prayer breakfast when the book was brought up by a brother in the group, and my pastor burst out in laughter, knowing how the book had been pursuing me. I’m surely glad it did. It’s a wonderful book of hope and redemption. This song is rooted in the mercy of the Lord. In Hosea 2:23 God is speaking to a people He had recently disowned, saying to them “You are Not My People”. I really found it interesting that it is written as a proper name. He’s saying that is their name now. That’s just so impactful. If you go back and read it, you will then see when He then changes his declaration to “You are my people”, it’s not declared as a proper name for them, but a description of who they are. I can only assume this means that being restore to the family restores them to their previous proper names. Anyway, I just always found that interesting. What’s beautiful about the passage is when the lost turn back and declare finally to the Lord “You are my God”. What a wonderful moment of restoration.
